The UNH Manchester D & IE Committee has selected KooKooLand  by Manchester native and screenwriter Gloria Norris for their 2019 title. The book’s themes of perseverance and the value of education, along with the author’s engaging and humorous writing about growing up here in Manchester under very challenging childhood circumstances, make this both an entertaining read and an important catalyst for community conversations. Because this is such an amazing opportunity to engage in discussion on such a broad community level, the Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Book Club will use KooKooLand as its first fall selection.

The Southern New Hampshire’s Shapiro Library online book club will be holding a conversation of KooKooLand by Gloria Norris via the SNHUreads Facebook page. Participation is available at any time during or post discussion. 

In Our Own Voice is a NAMI NH recovery education presentation given by trained presenters who themselves have struggled with mental illness and are in recovery. This brief, yet comprehensive, interactive presentation about mental illness includes a video, personal testimony and discussion. The presentation enriches the participants’ understandings of how people with these serious disorders cope with their symptoms, recover, and lead productive lives with hope, meaning and dignity. The program also empowers those who are faced with mental illness, and provides living proof that recovery is an ongoing reality.

Throughout the presentation, the audience is encouraged to offer feedback and ask questions. These opportunities for participants lead to a better understanding of what it is like to live with a mental illness and help break down the walls of stigma that surround mental illness.

 An evening about ACES at MCC. Ms. Norris’s memoir recounts her own Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), so we’ll be exploring ACES through an interactive theatrical presentation created by MCC Behavioral Science Department Chair, Laura ​Bilodeau and performed by MCC's Dramatic Flair students, where the audience will get to respond to the characters, followed by Q&A with the chair of the local Al-Anon and staff from the Upper Room Family Resource Center and other organizations addressing ACES in the Manchester area.

Stigma in the City: A Brief History of Mental Wellness in Manchester from 1960 to Today

Join Rik Cornell, VP of Community Relations at the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester, for a look at the history of mental health in Manchester. Part of the One-Book-One-Manchester series, Rik will examine the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental disorders during the 1960’s and how it shaped the projects where Gloria Norris grew up. This year’s Storytelling Festival is being held in conjunction with the 2nd annual One Book One Manchester program to promote literacy. It will focus on‘growing up’ in keeping with the themes of this year’s selection.  

Stories may touch on this topic specifically or generally, and can be treated literally or as a metaphor. Hosted by NHPR’s Peter Biello, this event will feature a variety of forms of storytelling, from traditional oration to time-based media, including the work of writers, visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, animators, graphic novelists, and anyone with a story to tell.
